Soft plastics

Try as hard as we can, it's sometimes very difficult to avoid using some kind of soft plastic bags.  But they can be recycled.

​The Central Coast is one of only four Australian cities to have soft plastic bag collections.  It's run by Curby and uses your fortnightly yellow bin.

Since 2021, 200,000kgs have been collected from the Central Coast - 57% of the total recovered nationally by the program. 

They’re being repurposed into park benches, fence posts, household bins and more.

Just seven easy steps:

  1. Sign up to Curby (from the link below)
  2. You collect some stickers from Kincumber Library
  3. You put your bags in a plastic bag
  4. You seal the bag with the sticker
  5. You scan the QR code through the Curby app
  6. Put the bag in the yellow bin (and remember to put the bin out on yellow bin night)
  7. Feel proud of yourself, 
What are soft plastics?

​Any scrunchable soft plastics labelled with the 2, 4 or 5 recycling numbers
Common soft plastics include:
  • Soft Plastic Snack wrappers
  • Foil lined Chip packets
  • Soft Plastic Fresh produce bags
  • Soft Plastic Fruit netting (with the metal bits cut off)
  • Soft Plastic Toilet paper wrapping
  • Plastic carry bags
  • Protective plastic film used in consumer goods packaging
  • Dry pet food bags
  • Cling wrap
